What Youthink!

WDR2007 and Communities

Several Youthink! readers submitted recommendations which are included in the World Development Report 2007. One recommendation calls for creating more opportunities for young people to invest in themselves. How do you think your community can do this? Here is what we heard from you.

When it comes to development, one of the best fundamental aspects is to create an effective network between active stakeholders or organizations that are active in development and related issues. As this will create an environment that supports new and innovative ideas from different angles. Unity can play a vital role in speeding up the process of development, regardless of the status of economy. So youth should engage themselves in these spheres so that their intelligence can be awaken, in order to support the development mechanisms within their specified country.

Development is a complete but total process, it begins with the very first of all steps and that the orientation. Youths should be empowered and Education is the key to successful development. It encompasses all, economic activities. It's the basics.

additional skills center should be provided in rural areas where the youth will taught vocational skills. vocational skills programme school be introduced into the secondary school curriculum. (success academy initiatives campaign, oke-ero local govt. area, kwara state, nigeria)

Locally produced fabrics should be [sewed] as uniform in schools. This will create lots of jobs in the informal sector.

Jason, 20, Philippines

One of the best solution for the youth to have a better future is to improve the quality of education among nations.

With education, a youth can have a lot of opportunities open for them. It is inevitable that most countries are doing their efforts to improve the education sector and I believe that every should do that because education will help alleviate every aspect of the youth's life for the betterment of the next generation which he or she will live by.

Let every youth of all nations experience formal education for them to be informed and be aware of their society and at large--the world. However, it is also noticeable that education continuously become a privilege rather than a right. We must not take this for granted for education must be a right of every youth in the world.

In my country, I am fortunate enough that I am receiving formal and good education through University of the Philippines. But as I look on my environment, I see a lot of youth who can't have the chance to get the same education I have, or worse, they got no chance but to work for the survival of their family. Poverty may be a hindrance but this may also be a challenge for the Philippine government to provide formal education to each and every Filipino.

This is my dream. I want every Filipino youth experience the significance of receiving education. It is by this way that we can analyze the society at large.

May the Philippine government got enough political will to solve this issue I am referring to not tomorrow, but NOW.

In Developing countries, Youth are facing the problem of unemployment which could frustrate them and lead to the risk of drugs and HIV/AIDs, and etc. Thus community should give them chance of volunteering at school, health post, sports which are running at community level. Developing countries should have provision of providing volunteer jobs after completion of some grade as Bachelors degree otherwise they are always go behind in lacking skill. and Government should provide skill related education rather not rotten academic degree only.

Jendeka, 26, Kenya

create more Industries in local areas, these will help in reducing rural urban migrations

Emutni, 18, Kenya

as youth we ought to be innovative and come up with many ideas on self employment. i have friends who have projects but no resources and i think thats our main problem. if only we could get help? .........

How much I learn is not the most important thing, it is what I learn and how I can use my knowledge effectively and positively.
