What Are Young People Doing to Fight Corruption?

Young people play a huge part in this fight. But it begins with behavior, which means refraining from corruption and to stop accepting that things can be gained through corrupted means.
—Andres Hernandez, Program Coordinator, Transparency International

January 22, 2007—Many young people today are fed up with corruption in their countries, and would like to see some changes. Here are some examples of what youth are doing around the world.

Network of African Youths Against Corruption
This group provides a platform for youth to voice concerns on national governance, and demand greater transparency, accountability and democratic leadership.

Guatemala Declaration on Young People's Engagement (PDF)
At the 12th International Anti-Corruption Conference, held in Guatemala in November 2006, 104 young people signed this manifesto for a fairer, corruption-free world.

Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Youth Concert
More than 25,000 young people attended this concert, organized by Transparency International Bangladesh.

Parliament of Kenya (February 6–10, 2007)
This conference will raise awareness of African young people (aged 18–30) on issues of corruption, governance, and poverty reduction and how policy issues can be formulated through parliamentary processes.

Are You Ready to Combat Corruption?

Would you agree or disagree with these statements:

  • Even if I were to witness corrupt activity, I would ignore it as long as it didn't harm me directly.
  • I would engage in corruption for a get-rich-quick dream of $1 million, even at the risk of 10-year imprisonment.

This was part of a survey that Transparency International Korea conducted, to see how youth in the country perceived corruption. Check out the presentation (Microsoft PPT file) to see their findings.
