Your Thoughts on Migration
We asked you the following questions on Migration:
- Would you like to visit or move to other countries, if possible?
- If you have migrated, do you intend to stay for good?
- Do you have information about possibilities to live and work abroad?
- Does your community or country have programs or policies to help people find out about life and work overseas?
- Do you have a passport? Would you know how to get one, would it be expensive or time-consuming?
- Do you have a family member living abroad? How often do you communicate?
- Has your role in the family been changed by this person's departure?
Your thoughts on migration are one of the topics that researchers working on the 2007 edition of the World Bank's leading annual publication, the World Development Report (WDR), want to know about!

Mariakha, 19, Papua New Guinea: I think migration is good for a family who came from a country were their GNP INCOME was very low. Also if the family is well educated they would earn a good living in their host country but if they are not ,well I suggest they go back home. |

Oloume Amamana Frederic Damien, 20, Cameroon: Migration is the mouvement of people from one geographical region to an other. It generaly takes two forms; that is in-migration (immigration) migration of people into a region and out-migration (emigration) migration of people out of a region. Migration is usually motivated by the search of employement, search of educational facilities, need of pease and rest, escaping from wars, search of better living condition in regions with high living standard, ect. Each one when migrating has a particular reason which motivates its migration. If i have the possibility to migrate one day, the reason will be to forether my studies because i am a student in search of a good educational system inorder to obtain a good skill. I think one should not migrate permenently to an other region because it causes a depopulation of its region, and also reduces the labour force avaible there. If i have to migrate, it is to obtain a good skill and if possible come and serve back my country in order to encourage its development. According to my last researchs on the net, i found out important information on possibilities to migrate in the United States of America as a student. I have also tried to find informations on my countries programs and policies to help people live and work oversea it is a little bit difficult.Almost all of my research to study abroad have been difficult despite the great number of informations i had on possibilities to migrate. This difficulty to migrate is mainly due to financial problem i have. Also, because i have no close relation or family member living abroad. Migration i tkink should be a tool for development and success, especially when it concerns the working age group thit is those between 18 and 55 years. This is because this age group compared to the dependend age group ( 0 to 17 years and 56 years upward ) is more active to bring about development. So if the are called to migrate, they should acquier a good skill to bring development in thier regions. Conclusively, migration is a good thing in the case where it is temporal, seasonnale, commutive , dayly ect because the people goes and come back and may inreturn bring about development and success. But once it is permenent, it causes great problems in the region of departure such as depopulation, lack of labour force, fall in living standard, just to mention these onces. The receiving region will on its side benefit the labour force coming into thier country there by increasing thier skill and thus development. Despite this advantage it also have negative effects on the destination region in the longrun such as high crime wave, over population, ect. I thus think migration is 40% good and 60% bad. |

Thomas, 39, Poland: Hello, my name is Thomas and I am living in Poland. 1. I wouldn't like to move to other country because I love my country - Poland. I have ambitions to improve my skills in Poland and do something good for it. I would like to make some visits to other countries like Germany, Russia, Greece, France, Italy and United Kingdom. I really do love to learn about history and cultures. Tourism is great fun for me and my family. 2. If I have migrated, I don't intend to stay for good - my country needs me and I can't leave it alone. 3. Yes, I have information about possibilities to live and work abroad. I think that many of polish people can move abroad and get a job, make money and get back to our country with earned cash. It can make small difference in all-trade in Poland because people will have more cash to spend on cargo. 4. Yes, my community and my country has programs or policies to help people find out about life and work overseas and I think that is a good idea. 5. I have got a passport. I know how to get one and it's not expensive but I would like to get a new passport faster than 3 months... 6. Yes, I have a family member living abroad - in Italy, United States of America, Ukraina and Russia. There are really much of communicate options. Internet, mail and phones... I would like to use internet and phone. 7. Yes, my family role has been changed by this person's departure. In past, things were easier, not so complicated. I would like to thank you for making all of this researchment things. I hope that my answers will be helpful. |

Tafadzwa, 22, Zimbabwe: I would like to visit another country only to work for some time, and return to my home country. The reason being that from working abroad, one gains different experiencies, skills from being part of a different society. The result is that one views things with a new perspective, thus able to identify some areas were they can make improvements. Temporary migration thus facilitates efficient exchange of ideas, skills, paractices since one id subjected to diversity. In my community,Africa University, and else where, there is limited publication on employment opportunities outside the country. Such information is more accessible to individuals who have relations staying ouside the country ( I do not have one), or those with access to the internet. However, some embassies do run programs that invite qualified persons to work abraod. I do have a passport, but in my counry getting one nowadsy is difficult due to the fact that millions of people want to get one. At the end of the day, the passport office takes a certain number of people per day, (now i hear its 60). The process to is quite long. whilst i appreciate migration with intent to benefit from foreign experiences, i am of the view that it is hurting Africa more than anything else, in the name of braindrain. I would rather encourage temporary migration, and sometimes people who do migarate do so with little, no or wrong information altogether. Eventually, they become worse off, and yet they were trying to run to greener pastures. |

Ceaser, 27, Zambia: I would really love to move to another country just for the purposes of finding a better education. You see, I completed my twelveth grade in 1997 and couldn't proceed to University due to lack of funds though I was selected. My results are good and I think any University in the world can accept me. I do not have any information about living abroad because if I had, i would have persued that. On the internet, all you find is people wanting you to pay $45 dollars for competing for a scholarship, which amount is unmanagable for most people like me. Besides, it may even be a hoax for you pay into an account of some people you may never even see in your life. In short, even if I had that money, i would not risk paying it! My community nor country neither has policies nor or programmes to help people find out about work and life overseas. If they have, then I am not aware of such and I am sure alot of people are not! I do not have a passport but I know how to get one. It is not expensive and takes a maximum of five working days to acquire one. I do not have any family member living abroad, apart from a few one friend in america, one in Russia, one in the UK and the other one in Belgium. I am only in constant touch with the one in Belgium. |

Abheepsa, 21, India: *Yes I would love to visit as many countries as I can. I would like to know the cultures, ideas, histories of different countries. I think this would make me a very "global" person -- someone who understands other societies but does not feel threatened by them. *No, I would like to come back to my country in the end. But also think that the saying "Home is where the heart is" stands. So, I am open to all possibilities. *Yes. I have access to the internet and hence all information about living and working in other countries is just a fingertip away. *Yes I have a passport. I do think that it is expensive, but since it is a necessity I have to bear with it. * No. None of my family members live abroad. |
