Haiti’s urban population, which rose from 25% in 1982 to 40% in 2003, is growing faster than the infrastructure can handle. Half of the urban population has no access to potable water and only 28% have adequate sanitation facilities.

In addition, trash is mostly dumped in the rivers as garbage removal is private and expensive.
