Selecting the Winners
A panel of four amateur and professional photographers selected the winning entries, from Thailand, Slovakia and Uganda. Because the competition was fierce and the judges were deeply moved by many of the images, nine honorable mentions were also awarded.
“All the photos tell a story … the subject matter and the fact that young people made the pictures often makes the story more compelling than if the picture was made by a professional photographer,” says Daniel Rosenbaum of the Washington Times.
The First Place Winner: In His Own Words
When asked why he takes pictures, first-prize winner Visarut Pookasorn, 19, from Thailand answered, “Sometimes what I see might be seen only once in my life so I bring my camera to places … In this world we have so many different cultures to see and study. I think it would be a good choice to keep them as a photo memory.”
Visarut, a media major at the University of Horkarnka in Bangkok Thailand, adds, “In the future I”d like to join in a magazine of Tourism Authority of Thailand as a photographer and writer.”
