Youth Entrepreneurs: Turning Ideas Into Viable Ventures

These five youth entrepreneurs translated their passions into viable projects to raise awareness among fellow teens and help change the world.

Being under 25 with no prior business experience didn’t stop them from turning their ideas into a reality.

Youthink spoke with them in November 2005 during a book tour stop in Washington, DC.

	Showing Teens How to Live Eco-friendly Her NGO The Otesha Project bikes a theater play to high schools across Canada to show teens how to make their consumer habits more sustainable. Jocelyn Land-Murphy is behind this project.
	Starting the Muslim Youth Helpline A computer and an extra phone line in his bedroom was all Mohammed needed to launch the Muslim Youth Helpline in the United Kingdom. Mohammed Mamdani is behind this project.
	Linking Rural Guatemalan Women to U.S. Markets Selling Guatemalan products at her college evolved into a fair-trade organization Mercado Global which brings these handmade products to U.S. boutiques. Benita Singh is behind this project.
	Bringing Microcredit to Argentina Inspired by Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, an Argentinean college student starts microcredit and social development projects in tough Buenos Aires neighborhoods. Maria D’Ovidio is behind this project.
	Bringing Taboo Issues to the Forefront Many laws in India criminalize homosexuality which “interferes with the work of organizations that work on HIV/AIDS prevention because people are not able to come out in a safe space and be able to access the resources,” explains Harjant. Harjant Gill is behind this project.
