#5 Improve maternal health

What does this mean:
Make sure that women who are pregnant get good medical care so that they remain healthy during the pregnancy, that their babies are born healthy, and that they remain healthy after their babies are born.

Why:
A woman’s body goes through many changes during pregnancy, which sometimes turn into health problems. Many of these problems wouldn’t happen if women had proper nutrition, medical care and medicine, or if they were able to plan their pregnancies. In rich countries, it is rare for a woman to die from pregnancy complications, but in some poor countries—especially in countries where women start having children at a very young age or have many pregnancies—it is common. If more mothers have healthy pregnancies and deliveries, they will live to take care of their children as they grow up and to contribute to the family’s overall well-being.
